Kinross Gold's Tasiast Mine is Mauritania's only gold mine and 90 per cent of its workforce are targeted from areas surrounding the mine and from across the country. Also at play is the setting up of procurement partnerships with communities in the region. There's no doubt that a mining concession brings huge benefits to a country and it’s GDP through taxes & concession fees. However, beyond this, job creation and the up-skilling of locals is an additional priority. It's Africa's Time visited to explore this public private partnership, its commitment to best practice environmental standards, and the impact it is having on Mauritania and its people.

On the 23 May 2011, 14 men were abducted from their cells by military police at the central prison in Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania. All of them were convicted on charges related to terrorism and at least 6 of the men were tortured while in police custody before their abduction. None of them have been seen or heard from since; no one but their captors knows if they are dead or alive. If they are alive, there are major concerns for their safety.
The video shows how Santé Sans Frontière (SSF), an NGO based in Mauritania, provides health care via a fleet of mobile health trucks to rural areas in the largely desert country. Dr. Ly Ciré, the founder of SSF, narrates the video. Kinross Gold -- a major investor in Mauritania through our Tasiast mine - provides support to SSF.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked...
Rebels in southern Senegal say an Australian company’s plans to mine for zircon, a rare mineral used for making mobile phones and nuclear power plants, amounts to “an act of war”. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports from the village of Niafarang in the Casamance region, where many say the mining will affect an area already feeling the brunt of climate change. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

✱ 253 Hotels in Cabo Verde - Lowest Price Guarantee ► http://goo.gl/0qBUFj Travel video about destination Cabo Verde. Cape Verde is an exotic island world, an archipelago off the coast of West Africa it combines the flair of the Canaries with the charm of Africa. Explorers Christopher Columbus and Vasco Ad Gama lay anchor there in order to replenish supplies and repair their ships. It was not until 1445 that the fifteen islands were discovered and consequently became a Portuguese colony. We begin in the north east of the islands, in Sal. Crystal blue sea and endless sandy beaches, islands of both wind and sunshine with a volcanic lunar landscape twenty five kilometres long and twelve kilometres wide. Sal owes its name and colonization to its once most important export of salt which wa...

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN a...

Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.
